Bruises and Contusions

Bruises and Contusions

What are bruises and contusions

Bruises and contusions are common injuries caused by blunt force trauma, such as a direct hit or fall. Bruises occur when small blood vessels break, allowing blood to seep into the surrounding tissue. Contusions are more serious bruises that involve deeper tissues and can cause swelling, tenderness, discoloration, and even numbness in the affected area. It is important to be evaluated for bruises and contusions to make sure there are no underlying fractures /  broken bones which can also occur. Treatment for bruises and contusions typically includes rest, elevation of the affected area, and applying ice or a cold compress to reduce swelling. If the injury is more serious, such as if there is pain or difficulty moving the injured part of the body, it may be wise to visit an urgent care center for further evaluation and treatment.
