Ear Infections

At CleCare, we know ear pain and fevers are no fun. Two of the most common types of ear infections include otitis media and otitis externa. Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear caused by bacteria or viruses; this type of infection is most common in children but can affect adults as well. Otitis externa is a less common condition that affects the outer ear and ear canal; it is usually caused by bacterial or fungal infections. Most commonly seen in the summer months in swimmers.

At CleCare Urgent Care, both types of ear infections are diagnosed using a physical exam and other tests such as a hearing test. Treatment for otitis media typically involves antibiotics to stop bacterial growth, while treatment for otitis externa may include antibiotics, antifungal medications, or steroid medications to reduce inflammation. In some cases, ear tubes are used to allow fluid to drain out of the middle ear which will usually require specialist consultation.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has an ear infection it is important to visit a healthcare provider right away. An untreated ear infection can cause serious complications such as hearing loss and even permanent damage to the inner ear structures; therefore it is important to seek medical attention right away when symptoms develop.
