What do long care rides, roller coasters, and stomach viruses all share in common? Nausea and vomiting! Nausea and vomiting are common uncomfortable symptoms that can be caused by a variety of medical conditions. \
When nausea and / or vomiting become severe enough to require medical attention, it is important for the patient to provide as much information as possible about their current condition. This includes details such as when the nausea started, how long it has been going on for, what makes it worse or better, and whether there have been any changes in diet or activity level prior to onset. Additionally, the patient should also inform the provider if they experience any other symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, or nausea that is accompanied by other signs of illness.
At CleCare Urgent Care, nausea and vomiting may be treated with oral medications, IV fluids,IV antinausea medications and / or lifestyle modifications depending on the severity and underlying cause. Common antiemetic treatments include prochlorperazine (Compazine), promethazine (Phenergan), metoclopramide (Reglan) or ondansetron (Zofran). While these medications can provide relief from nausea, they should not be taken for longer than a few days unless instructed by a doctor. In addition to medication, it may also be helpful to make dietary adjustments such as avoiding spicy foods and eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day.
