Throat Pain
Throat infections, sometimes referred to as pharyngitis, can be caused by viruses or bacteria and can range from mild to severe. One of the most common forms of throat infections is Strep pharyngitis which is a throat infection caused by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, also known as Group A strep. Strep throat is one of the most common bacterial throat infections, causing inflammation and pain in the throat. Other bacterial throat infections include laryngitis and tonsillitis.
In some cases, throat infections are treated with antibiotics if caused by a bacterial infection. However, many throat infections are viral infections and will resolve without treatment over time. It is important to be able to recognize and diagnose a viral vs bacterial throat infection. At CleCare Urgent Care, our providers are experts at determining the root cause of your sore throat and can diagnose whether an infection is viral or bacterial based on symptoms such as sore throat, fever and swollen lymph nodes, as well as signs during a physical examination.
Treatment for throat infections will depend on the type and severity of the infection. Strep pharyngitis is treated with antibiotics, such as penicillin or amoxicillin, to reduce symptoms and also prevent potential complications such as rheumatic fever. Laryngitis is usually treated with supportive care, including rest and drinking plenty of fluids. Most viral throat infections will resolve over time without treatment, though medications may be prescribed to relieve symptoms.
Remember, prompt diagnosis and treatment of throat infections can help to alleviate discomfort and reduce the risk of complications. For more information about throat infections and their treatments, please visit us at CleCare Urgent Care
