Upper respiratory infections
Upper respiratory infections
Respiratory infections are caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can affect the airways and lungs. Common types of respiratory infections include bronchitis, pneumonia, and upper respiratory infection (URI). Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you may need to visit urgent care for treatment.
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi located in the chest cavity which carry oxygen into and out of the lungs. Symptoms of bronchitis include wheezing, coughing up phlegm, difficulty breathing, chest tightness or pain, fatigue and fever. Bronchitis is usually caused by a virus but can also be caused by bacteria. Treatment typically involves rest and over-the-counter medications such as cough suppressants and bronchodilators. Antibiotics may be prescribed if bronchitis is caused by bacteria.
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can cause inflammation and fluid buildup in the air sacs. It is usually caused by a virus or bacteria, but can also be caused by fungi or other infectious agents. Symptoms of pneumonia include fever, chills, chest pain, coughing up sputum (thick mucus), difficulty breathing and fatigue. Treatment for pneumonia typically involves antibiotics to kill the infection-causing microorganisms as well as supportive care such as rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications like cough suppressants and bronchodilators to help open up airways.
The most common type of respiratory infection, an upper respiratory infection (URI) is caused by a variety of viruses and commonly affects the nose, throat, bronchial tubes and sinuses. Symptoms may include sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, fever and fatigue. Treatment for upper respiratory infections typically involves rest and over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers and decongestants. Antibiotics are not usually prescribed for URIs since they are generally caused by viruses which antibiotics do not treat.
