Urgent care clinics are available to assist patients that are looking for immediate, convenient medical care. In that manner, they are similar to an emergency room. The difference, however, is that ERs are meant to treat major, life-threatening injuries and illnesses while urgent care centers manage life’s non life threatening conditions.

In simple terms, an urgent care is seen as a walk-in health center that focuses in offering non-emergent health care conditions, including the treatment of the typical illnesses and injuries such as fractures and sprains, cuts and burns, scrapes, stings and bites, flu and cold symptoms, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and much more.

Most urgent care clinics offer both diagnostic and preventive care such as well visits, immunizations, STD testing and annual physicals. As far as cost, most urgent care clinics will accept major PPOs and insurance cover, Medicare, as well as self-pay in the form of credit cards or cash.

Is Urgent Care Right For You?

  • When should I go to an Urgent Care clinic instead of the emergency room?
Urgent Care clinics are an excellent option for non-emergency medical situations. If you have a minor injury or illness that requires prompt attention but is not life-threatening, such as a fever, minor cuts or burns, mild allergic reactions, or common illnesses like the flu or strep throat, an Urgent Care clinic is usually the right choice. For severe or life-threatening conditions, it is best to go to the emergency room.
  • What services do Urgent Care clinics provide?
Urgent Care clinics offer a wide range of medical services, including treatment for common illnesses (such as cold and flu symptoms), minor injuries (like sprains and strains), minor fractures, cuts and lacerations, infections, allergies, and respiratory issues. They also provide diagnostic services, X-rays, laboratory testing, vaccinations, and can often assist with minor procedures, such as suturing or splinting.
  • Do I need an appointment to visit an Urgent Care clinic?
In most cases, appointments are not necessary at Urgent Care clinics. Walk-in visits are typically welcome, allowing you to receive prompt medical attention without the need for an appointment. However, it is always a good idea to check with the specific Urgent Care clinic beforehand, as some clinics may offer online check-in or appointment options for added convenience.
  • Can I visit an Urgent Care clinic for ongoing medical conditions or preventive care?
Urgent Care clinics are primarily designed to provide immediate care for urgent but non-life-threatening conditions. For ongoing medical conditions, routine check-ups, or preventive care, it is recommended to establish a relationship with a primary care physician who can provide comprehensive and continuous care. However, Urgent Care clinics can be a convenient option for minor issues or when you cannot access your primary care provider.
  • What is Urgent Care?
Urgent Care is a type of medical facility that provides immediate medical attention for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that require prompt attention but do not warrant a visit to the emergency room. Urgent Care clinics are staffed by healthcare professionals who can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including sprains, infections, minor fractures, and common illnesses.
